Simpler Recycling
The UK government plans to introduce new, simpler recycling regulations that will reform waste collections and recycling across England. The new reforms aim to clear up confusion over recyclable and non-recyclable materials and standardise recycling practices across England.
These changes will help transform recycling rates and tackle illegal waste activities. However, we have been assured that enforcement of specific WTNs for the various strands of recyclable goods will not be immediate on 01-04-25 as long as businesses have the minimum requirement of a general waste WTN.
What are the new recycling requirements and how does it impact you?
Effective from 31st March 2025, under the new Simpler Recycling regulations, businesses with 10 or more full-time equivalent employees are required to separate dry mixed recyclables, glass, and food from their general waste. Businesses with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees have until March 2027 to comply.
Simpler Recycling Timeline
The current proposed timeline for implementation is below:
- By 31st March 2025 – all businesses and other non-household premises with 10 or more full-time equivalent employees are required to separate plastic, paper and card, glass, metals (cans, tins and foil)* and food waste from their general waste
- By 31st March 2027 – this will expand to cover businesses with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees and include plastic film, plastic packaging and plastic bags.
